Induction Procedures
The induction of new staff goes way beyond welcoming them to the company. It is your duty to train them in health & safety so they are equipped to enter their work areas and perform their functions safely.
It is usual to find a check sheet at the heart of the induction procedure. It ensures that no item is ignored as the tick is placed, and that is its only benefit. It neither shows what was said or understood by the people involved. As a record of the event it doesn't come close to what is needed in the compensation climate of today.
The Health & Safety element is therefore, questionable and places the company and employees at risk. In the event of an accident health and safety documentation often comes under scrutiny by enforcement agencies or solicitors acting on behalf of the injured person. Producing this single piece of paper is unlikely to provide you with the defence of 'due diligence' or help in mitigation, thus exposing your company to possible prosecution, fines or a compensation claims. The same consequences apply if your induction of new staff is delayed or inadequately conducted.
If you are bothered about that, then you may be interested in elevating your induction standards and removing some of the potential pitfalls from existing procedures: -
